Our client FCA, was looking to create a mobile app to support their VR Jeep experience at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. In addition to enhancing the simulation experience, the app would then be utilized as a hub to host all of FCA’s seven individual brand’s content including stories, videos, and highlights.
Background
I was the lead UI designer and was responsible for overseeing the visual design, design system, and art direction. I worked closely with a UX designer on wireframes and interaction design. I collaborated with the development team to understand the technical constraints and to ensure the design quality exceeded the client’s expectations.
My Role
Our design team had six weeks to concept, design, and develop the Jeep Adventure app. The app enabled guests to experience the simulation through a seamless registration, allowing them to create unique user profiles and connect with other guests in a Jeep Rubicon while virtually driving through a trail.
The app would capture a driver’s runtime and display the results on a leaderboard in real-time. It would then become a destination to access information on Jeep brand events, content, auto shows, and more.
Challenge
At the beginning of the project, we didn’t have a clear mission or specific goal for the experience. While requirements were fuzzy and ever-changing, our team members were in constant communication and we held workshops with our stakeholders every two weeks.
With the tight deadline, I paired up with the UX designer to quickly come up with the concept design, user flow, and wireframes. Our team made the decision to skip the low-fidelity wireframes and create mid-fidelity wireframes to better visualize the content structure and to give our stakeholders a taste of the app in the earlier stages.
Our team also collaborated with third party vendors to create two interactive experiences using various technologies called The Jeep VR simulation and the FCA Stories experience. The app was built to be integrated with these experiences.
The Process

Two weeks before CES 2020, we launched the MVP experience. The app would capture a driver’s runtime and display the results on a leaderboard in real-time. It would then become a destination to access future information on Jeep brand events, content, auto shows, and more.
The Outcome
